“She is ill, (「彼女は病気だ) but she is quite rational.”

“Very good. (「結構) It is only in her presence that we can clear the matter up. (彼女がいないと我々はこの事件を解決することはできない) Let us go up to her.”

“She will not see me,” (「妻は私に会いませんよ」) cried Ferguson.

“Oh, yes, (「いや、会う) she will,” (彼女は会う」) said Holmes. (ホームズは言った) He scribbled a few lines upon a sheet of paper. (彼は紙に何行か手紙を書いた) “You at least have the entree, (「君は少なくとも入ることが出来る) Watson. (ワトソン) Will you have the goodness to give the lady this note?”

I ascended again and handed the note to Dolores, (私はもう一度上がって行ってドロレスにその手紙を手渡した) who cautiously opened the door. (彼女は慎重に扉を開けた) A minute later I heard a cry from within, (一分後私は中から叫び声が上がるのを聞いた) a cry in which joy and surprise seemed to be blended. (喜びと驚きが混じった叫び声だった) Dolores looked out.

“She will see them. (「奥様は会います) She will leesten,” (奥様は聞きます」) said she.

At my summons Ferguson and Holmes came up. (私の招きでファーガソンとホームズが上がってきた) As we entered the room (我々が部屋に入った時) Ferguson took a step or two towards his wife, (ファーガソンは一、二歩妻のほうに歩み寄った) who had raised herself in the bed, (彼女はベッドに起き上がっていた) but she held out her hand to repulse him. (しかし彼女は手を上げて彼を拒絶した) He sank into an armchair, (彼は肘掛け椅子に座り込んだ) while Holmes seated himself beside him, (ホームズは彼の隣に腰掛けた) after bowing to the lady, (女性に一礼した後) who looked at him with wide-eyed amazement.

“I think we can dispense with Dolores,” (「ドロレスには出て行ってもらった方がいいでしょう」) said Holmes. (ホームズは言った) “Oh, (「ああ) very well, (いいですよ) madame, (奥さん) if you would rather she stayed I can see no objection. (もしあなたが居て欲しいというのなら反対する理由はありません) Now, (さて) Mr. Ferguson, (ファーガソンさん) I am a busy man with many calls, (僕は沢山の依頼が来ている忙しい人間です) and my methods have to be short and direct. (だから僕のやり方は簡潔で直接的にならざるをえない) The swiftest surgery is the least painful. (手術は速ければ速いほど痛みも少ない) Let me first say what will ease your mind. (最初にあなたを安心させる事を話しましょう) Your wife is a very good, (あなたの妻は非常に善良で) a very loving, (愛情にあふれ) and a very ill-used woman.”

Ferguson sat up with a cry of joy.
