(消えていた) His face was disturbed and troubled, (彼の顔は動転して困り果てていた) while his clothes were disarranged and untidy. (一方彼の服は乱れてだらしなかった) He had evidently come with the intention of consulting with Sherlock Holmes, (彼はシャーロックホームズに相談するつもりで来たようだった) for on perceiving his colleague (なぜなら彼の同僚に気付いて) he appeared to be embarrassed and put out.
