“What!” (「なに！」) Sherlock Holmes staggered back, (シャーロックホームズは後ろへよろめいた) white with chagrin and surprise. (悔しさと驚きで蒼白になって) “Do you mean that she has left England?” (「彼女はすでにイギリスを発ったというのか？」)

“Never to return.” (「二度と戻りません」)

“And the papers?” (「それではあの紙は？」) asked the King hoarsely. (王はかすれた声で尋ねた) “All is lost.” (「すべて終わりだ」)
