Leaving the unconscious man in the charge of my housekeeper, (意識不明の男を家政婦に任せて) we all three went down to the deadly lagoon. (我々三人は死の潟に下りて行った) On the shingle (砂利浜の上に) there was piled a little heap of towels and clothes left by the stricken man. (襲われた男が残したタオルと服が小さな山に積み上げられていた) Slowly I walked round the edge of the water, (私はゆっくりと水辺の周りを歩いた) my comrades in Indian file behind me. The strange object at which I pointed (私が指差した奇妙な物体は) did indeed look like a tangled mass torn from the mane of a lion. “It has done mischief enough. (「もう悪行は十分やりつくした) Its day is over!” (これで最後だ！」) I cried. (私は叫んだ) “Help me, (「手を貸してくれ) Stackhurst! (スタックハースト) Let us end the murderer forever.” (この殺人犯を永遠に始末しよう」)
