Barrymore was crouching at the window (バリモアはある窓にかがみこんでいた) with the candle held against the glass. (ろうそくをガラスに向かって掲げて) His profile was half turned towards me, (彼の横顔は半分私の方に向けられていて) and his face seemed to be rigid with expectation (そして彼の顔は何かを予期して固まっているように見えた) as he stared out into the blackness of the moor. (彼が荒野の暗闇を覗き込んでいる時) For some minutes he stood watching intently. (数分間彼は熱心に見ながら立っていた) Then he gave a deep groan and (その後彼は深いうめき声を上げ) with an impatient gesture he put out the light. (いらいらしたような身振りで明かりを消した) Instantly I made my way back to my room, (すぐに私は自分の部屋に戻った) and very shortly (そしてそのすぐ後に) came the stealthy steps (こそこそした足音がやってきて) passing once more upon their return journey. (もう一度横切って戻っていった) Long afterwards (それからずいぶん後) when I had fallen into a light sleep (私がうつらうつらしていた時) I heard a key turn somewhere in a lock, (私はどこかの錠の中で鍵が回る音を聞いた) but I could not tell whence the sound came. (しかし私はどこからその音が来たか分からなかった) What it all means I cannot guess, (一体全体どういう意味か想像も出来ない) but there is some secret business (しかし何か秘密の出来事がある) going on in this house of gloom (この家の闇の中で進行中の) which sooner or later we shall get to the bottom of. (遅かれ早かれ我々が解明するだろう) I do not trouble you with my theories, (私は自分の理論で君を煩わせない) for you asked me to furnish you only with facts. (君は私にただ事実だけを報告するように頼んだので) I have had a long talk with Sir Henry this morning, (私はサー・ヘンリーと今朝長い間話し合った) and we have made a plan of campaign (そして私たちは行動計画を作った) founded upon my observations of last night. (昨夜の私の観察に基づいて) I will not speak about it just now, (それについては今は話さない) but it should make my next report interesting reading. (しかしそれは私の次の報告を読んで面白いものにするはずだ)
